SUPER DELUXE REVIEW
SUPER DELUXE REVIEW
Most awaited Tamil cult film Super Deluxe hit the screens today.
There are 4 parallel plots taking place at the same time, involving the lives of Shilpa (Vijay Sethupathi), Leela (Ramya Krishnan) and Arputham (Mysskin), Vaembu (Samantha) and Mugil (Fahadh Faasil), and another one involving 4 boys. The best part about the writing is that these plotlines don't merge at one point. One sub-plot becomes an influencing factor in another, but after that, they part ways. The way the events unfold is interesting and makes the movie more engrossing.
While the first half of the movie presents the unconventional characters, their conflicts, the changes that happen in their lives over a day, the second half dives into emotions, as each of the characters gets to learn the secret of life, with one or the other character's influence in the life of the other, beautifully connecting them.
The maker touches upon various aspects of life - religion, caste, sex, politics, science, gender, marital issues, and effectively conveys his thoughts without getting preachy at any point.
The characterizations are done well. Vijay Sethupathi's Shilpa is one of the best and honest portrayals of transgenders in Tamil Cinema. Her character is both strong and vulnerable.
Samantha's Vaembu is her most explosive role. Nobody in their right minds conjures up a character like this for her. Of course, unless it is Thiagarajan Kumararaja. But there is a Myskinish touch in her role.
Ramya Krishnan delivers a memorable performance proving herself as a powerhouse performer, especially in her sequences with Soori, towards the end.
Fahadh is a natural, and he delivers any emotion with utmost ease, be it his views on the society and system, or the way his anger transforms gradually into love, and beautifully complementing him is Samantha, who's played the role of her life, and amazes with her impressive act with multiple dimensions.

The strength of Super Deluxe is its writing. Written by four filmmakers including Thiagarajan Kumararaja, it blurs the lines between what is genres. Acclaimed director Mysskin also has a hand in the writing of the film and we cannot for sure say who wrote which part of the film.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's score and the usage of various tracks to good effect needs special mention. The cinematography by P. S. Vinod and Nirav Shah is crookedly great. Sathyaraj Natarajan's editing work for this film is easily the best in an Indian film this year till now.
It has commentary on various social issues and deep philosophical questions about morals and life's existence itself.
Thiagarajan Kumararaja and his team of writers gift us an addictive cocktail, that's a heady mix of emotions and entertainment. Super Deluxe is an unforgettable, not to be missed top-notch cinematic experience that deserves to be celebrated.
