Christmas Competition Of 10 Films At Box Office
Top 10 anticipated movies for this December It Consist of regional movies including Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran, Mammootty’s Masterpiece and Nani’s MCA releasing on the occasion of Christmas.
With Christmas vacations are about to begin, theatres are awaiting their bonanza period. To cash in on this mood, producers try to release their films over the Christmas weekend, expecting good first-day collections. This has resulted in the box office being crowded with big releases from all industries. While movie-goers are spoilt for choice, the producers, especially of small budget films, are facing trouble in finding a good number of screens.
Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran and Santhanam’s Sakka Podu Podu Raja are the Tamil films that are slated to release on December 22. Malayalam films Vimaanam starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Masterpiece starring Mammootty, Mayanadhi starring Tovino Thomas and Aadu 2 starring Jayasurya is also slated to release on the same day, as is the Telugu film Hello, starring Akhil Akkineni. Nani’s MCA and Kannada film Anjaniputra starring Puneeth Rajkumar will release on December 21. Bollywood biggie Tiger Zinda Hai, starring Salman Khan, only adds more pressure on these films.
Earlier Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam releases were mostly exclusive and collections of each did not affect the other. Today, audiences breach boundaries in search of good quality films. At a time like this, only two things can help a film - content or a star’s strong fan base - record a good opening followed by lifetime collection.
All the films that are releasing for Christmas have stars who enjoy a strong fan base in their respective industries bar Akhil Akkineni, whose Hello is his second film in the industry. Not only does Hello have to compete with Nani’s MCA, but Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai. Bhai has a strong fan base in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This is also an important film for Akhil whose debut tanked at the box office.
Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran is a much-anticipated film in Tamil and the star cast only raises the expectations. From the teaser to the songs, everything related to this film has got a lot of attention. The film is expected to make a dent at the box office on the first day thanks to the cast and the buzz around the film. Compared to this, Santhanam’s Sakka Podu Podu Raja is smaller in terms of budget. While Santhanam does have a good fan base, it is due to his innings as a comedian and not a lead actor.
Coming to Malayalam film Masterpiece - both Mammootty and Prithviraj Sukumaran are big stars in Kerala. Also, this is not the first time that their films have clashed at the box office. Prithviraj’s Adam Joan and Mammotty’s Pullikaran Staraa released on September 1, and both the films failed to impress the audience and critics. Only, this time they have to compete with the young, upcoming actor Tovino Thomas’s movie Mayanadhi and the sequel to comic entertainer Aadu.
How will the films fare at the box office and which ones will come on top is something that we will have to wait and see.
